Mountains in Northern Slovakia
From the Western Tatras to the Mala Fatras
Northern Slovakia has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. In the north, you can go walking in the Western Tatras and Rohace. Further south are the Oravska Magura and the wonderful, Mala Fatras.
During the summer months, these mountain ranges are perfect for walking through, or hiking up. There are also numerous cycle routes, with a wide range of difficulty.
In the winter season, the mountains boast a number of great ski centres, including Vratna, Kubinska Hola, Park Snow and Zuberec.

Lakes in Northern Slovakia
From the Orava Dam to Liptovska Mara
Two of Slovakia's largest lakes can also be found in the region. They are the Orava Dam, near Namestovo, and Liptovska Mara, near Liptovsky Mikulas.
The Orava Dam was built in 1954, at the expense of 5 villages, which were submerged as a result of the damming of the river Orava. You can sail a boat to Slanica Island, where there is an interesting museum.
Liptovska Mara is a summer recreation centre, based around a dam on the river Váh, which was made from the flooding of 13 villages. Activities around the lake include surfing, yachting, windsurfing, water bicycles, miniature golf, fishing and sailing.

Caves in Northern Slovakia
From the Cave of Liberty to Demanovska Ice Cave
Among the caves in Northern Slovakia, are two of the country's most famous show caves. The Ice Cave at Demanovska and the Cave of Liberty.
Ice filling occurs in the lower parts of the Demanovska Ice Cave, including ground ice, ice columns, stalactites and stalagmites. Bones of various vertebrates, including cave bears, mistaken for dragon bones in the 18th century, have been discovered here.
The most visited show cave in Slovakia, the Demanovska Cave of Liberty, is also one of the most beautiful. It is famous for its sinter waterfalls and stalemates, sphaerolithic stalactites and its many diverse forms of stalactites and stalagmites. |
